Steve Wiebe was born on January 3, 1969 in Seattle, Washington and is best known for his spot amongst the most elite players of Donkey Kong. Though he was well known for his high scores in video games for years, it was 2007’s documentary, “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” that really brought his popularity to a new level.

I met Steve at the E for All Expo in 2008 where he was getting ready to go for a new world record in Donkey Kong. We had a great interview about his passion for the game, thoughts on gaming today, and where his mind’s at for the upcoming attempt at being #1. With my final, “good luck”, I was the last person he spoke with before starting his game, in which he went on to scoring 1,000,200 points. Though it wasn’t quite enough to be #1, it was only the third time that a score of over 1 million was achieved in a public venue.

In addition to learning that Mr. Wiebe is quite a nice person and enjoys playing lots of different games, I discovered that he’s quite the music man as well. A person with a strong Christian faith and talent for playing music lead him to release “The King of Song”, an album in December, 2009.

In September, 2010, Steve regained the title of Donkey Kong champion, but was beaten in January, 2011 by Hank Chien. What does the future hold for Steve? Probably more fierce battles between him and Billy Mitchell, Hank Chien, and other top contenders, but regardless, I just want to thank Mr. Wiebe for being really nice and wish him the best.
