In this PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale article from last week, I confirmed that there were 18 known characters in the game prior to an official weekend update with my source, in which I then learned of several more. With these added final representatives, the end roster in the game exceeded 20, and that’s where I left things at.
Fast forward to last Friday’s Street Fighter 25th Anniversary event in Los Angeles, where I spoke with some of the crew from SuperBot Entertainment (in this story), and I revealed to them that even with the leak, I wouldn’t unveil any final characters that are disc based or coming from DLC.
We did talk about my hints and they appreciate my approach as of late and what I plan to do from here on out. That being said, there are some questions that I have been dodging, as to not 1) Ruin any certain surprises that are what people want 😉 and 2) Not say that certain characters did not make the cut, thus derailing some people’s hype train.
So what I’m saying here is that many out there will be plenty satisfied with the final count. My riddle to you: “PlayStation characters of old and new, borrowed and true, Pacific and Eastern, some just terrific…and others you (y)earn.”
Amongst the different pictures I’ve put up, there are several hints…some of which have already been deciphered, with those characters now being out. Other hints have been successfully picked apart by some clever gamers and reflect yet-to-be revealed roster fillers. Those that truly believe they’re right on the money with my picture hints and with what I’ve written about some future characters, might be right…whereas others will no doubt, frown. There’s more to come than you know and more to come than what you think you know. My best advice to all of you at this point, is to be optimistic about what SuperBot Entertainment’s first attempt at such a game winds up being, for it is overall…pretty awesome.

We just saw the possibility of Ryu Hayabusa, Jin, Kazuya and maybe Clank getting his own slot.
That’s already 24 characters in total including the massive leak from the beta.
I doubt your Jet Ski photo was a hint for any of the characters already leaked, and we’re still missing Cloud or Lightning from Final Fantasy, Snake, Crash and Spyro at the least. Throw in others like Wander and we’re reaching 30 characters in the roster!

With the recent leak, assuming Jin, Kazuya, Ryu Hayabusa and Clank are part of the roster then we’ve already got 24 characters.
You and SuperBot say the fans will be happy with the roster, if that were true then I would personally say the fans would be happy if we got Snake, Cloud/Lightning, Spyro and Crash. Add in others like Wander and that would mean we at least get 30 characters if not more.
And did that martial arts picture represent Jin/Kazuya or SOMEONE else?
Everyone knows that Crash Bandicoot is the most requested character for this game. Even Paul Gale. Since he told us to be optimistic about what SuperBot has in store for us, I think it’s pretty safe to say that the jetski picture was a Crash Bandicoot hint! (At least I hope so…)
One thing’s for certain: When/if Crash Bandicoot gets officially announced, I’m going to be the happiest gamer alive. Oh, how I miss that bandicoot.

One thing is bothering me though…does the fact that Raiden is a playable character in this mean we don’t get Solid Snake as a playable character? I mean so much evidence points towards his inclusion….but I really don’t know what to think.
As excited as I am for the game, reading your updates always seems to bring my hype level back up to when I first saw the original six characters, so props to you. What you’re doing is working quite well.
A couple quick questions, though. The first one is concerning the riddle you left for us tonight. Are you referring to the roster as a whole, or entirely to “undisclosed” fighters? It seems fairly straightforward, but it also changes entirely depending on how you interpret it. I don’t really expect a clearcut answer, but I figured it was worth a shot.
Secondly, can you give me a “nudge nudge, hint hint” if you have any information on whether or not a NIS representative made it into the game? A good friend of mine would basically only get hyped if there was, and it’s starting to be a buzzkill since I’ve had to listen to him for quite some time now. Once again, I don’t expect a very clear response (if one at all), but I appreciate the fact you looked over this comment anyway.

I have been following the information in your network since it only seemed as a “crazy” idea with pics of Sweet Tooth and I really appreciate all the information you have provided us.
That being said, I think that if the questions about the cast are so important is that for many, the decision to buy or not this game will be mostly based on whether or not their favorite characters are included. (Im not included since I know I will buy the game even if all my favorite characters are not included, obviously I will feel a little frustrated and disappointed but thats all :P)
There are a lot of speculation, confirmed and unconfirmed leaks, etc. but dont you think that if some of them are true (such as 2 Coles being separate characters, 3 Tekken characters in Tekken – though Jin could be the assist Kazuya or the other way -), wouldnt this “steal”, in some way, spots in the roster to include some unique series characters?.
One more thing, speaking of the characters that havent been leaked in any way, I know you can not give us much information yet, but there are some series that are being discussed very much in the forums and the online community, some of the most renowned ones are Final Fantasy, Assassin’s Creed Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot.
Perhaps can you tell us (hint us in any way) what do the people from Square-Enix, Ubisoft and whoever has the rights to Crash now, think about the game or the possibility of including their IPs?
Final Fantasy is one of the all times most important sagas in the world of video games and was very important for the beginning and growth of the PS1 bank in the 90s.
Assassins Creed is one of the most important sagas from the modern times (Mass Effect too, but for now I leave it aside as It started as a Microsoft exclusive). Its inclusion could be used as a way of promoting the new ACIII (same for the new Tomb Raider) as could be the inclusion of Raiden and Dante (possible leaks) for the same purposes.
and Crash Bandicoot, which was arguably for the PS1 what Mario Bros. is for Nintendo and many Sony fans have been wishing its inclusion Sony from the start.

1. Which 3rd party company would you like to see apart of this game in the future? I.E. Capcom, Square-Enix, etc.
2. Is there a character from Square-Enix in this game?

Hey paul! thanx 4 that update. it really got me hyped 4 the roster, but there is one thing I have 2 ask and I know u probably cant say anything about it, but in that massive leak a few days ago the uncharted 3 cargo plane stage was shown and a bioshock stage with the city in the sky thing. are those actual stages cuz they said not all of those things will be part of the final game.

I want to believe Paul but so far everything from already revealed character and leaked stuff hinted that SCEJ character will heavily underrepresented (so far only 2 of 12 character revealed, and nothing from leaked list), no SCEJ JRPG character are hinted at all despite having ton of games, (poor wild arms), and no first party female from japanese franchise gonna make it to character list. I still wish the final roster will not be western heavy.
could you please tell me, can i hope that the final roster would make me excited? (especially for playstation fan that mainly play japanese games from ps1/2 era and psp (which all of them are known for JRPG console))

Hi Paul, these latest leaks have got me worried. They seem to suggest that we will have multiple character reps from a franchise that isn’t even first party. I know many people here are fighting games fans and I have nothing against Tekken but I just think that they are taking up roster spots that could be available for more unique characters that would please a wider variety of Playstation fans. These characters being Wander, ICO/Yorda, Chimera, Ethan Mars, Kat, Cloud/Lightening and even though I’m mostly over the fact that it’s possible they’re not in I’ll just throw Crash and Spyro in too. I feel this has been on a lot of fans minds. My question to you Paul is will there be multiple reps from a franchise and theoretically if there were would it take away the chances of some great unique first party characters getting in even if there not even close to the ones I mentioned.
I’ve been a fan of your coverage on this since day 1 when this was revealed in November and have really expanded to enjoy all of the content on your site! It’s really great! It would mean a lot if you would answer my question and I appreciate all you’ve done for the fans!

So I think the leaks are a very well orcastrated PR campaign which is good. Lots of Hype and surprises are coming from these “leaks”. On July 29th I put up my Q/A in which I come forth with new information, that’s supposed to represent the final build of the game, characters and all. Prior to this weekend, I did not know all that there was to the game. It was in this story that I even said things such as “James Bond didn’t make the cut” and “My PlayStation Home Avatar idea didn’t make the cut”. Some of the information that I got also reflected in one way or another, my previous hints.

I know the voice actor that voices them ( David Hayter) has been leaked by eric laden via a tweet but there has been no word on it and it may seem that Raiden is the MGS rep in this game but I would like some clarification on the matter. The riddle is obviously confirming Morgan Freeman as a playable character!!!! Just thing about it. Old and new. Borrowed and True, he has lived in both Pacific and Eastern Coasts, and everyone yearns for him. OMFG YES!!!

There are some far fetched things that you’d think would not be in the game, that are…and others that you want, but aren’t. Sorry to be vague.
Why not just say how many characters are in the final roster, but still not tell us who’s in it?
I would like to but have an agreement with SuperBot that I would not give away anything more that’s too concrete.
