For more Street Fighter news: Street Fighter X Tekken update
I bet that this wouldn’t come as a surprise in 1999 if you heard that Capcom was thinking about making another addition to their SF3 series, because after all, SF2’s legacy lasted a very long time with many expansions, but this news actually takes place almost 10 years after 3rd Strike came out.
Before Capcom 100% committed themselves to doing Street Fighter 4, they were actually toying around with the idea of making a fourth title in the Street Fighter 3 series and it would have come out in February, 2009 (instead of SF4). The reason being that Capcom already had an overall story to work with, a balance of characters, and gameplay respected by the hardcore fans.
The decision was leaning towards going with 3D graphics from the start, but there was talk of it sticking to 2D drawn artwork like past titles in the series, but also the possibility of going complete 3D…movement and all. Capcom ultimately decided to relaunch and just give the fans what they really wanted: Street Fighter 4 and go with 3D visuals to attract today’s modern gamer, but maintain that classic gameplay from the SF2 series, which was loads more popular amongst the mainstream crowd than SF3.
As a gamer, would you have been happy to see Street Fighter 3.5 in 2009…ten years after Third Strike? Or, are you mostly satisfied that in the end, we got an actual new entry to the series (which ironically takes place between 2 and 3)?
A big thanks to Taki for the details.
Long time friend from Capcom, Taki Enomoto.
I would have loved Street Fighter 3.5 more than 4 I think.
Still SF4 was cool.

I think I would have rather had another 3s game because ssf4 isn’t as fun mainly because you have to use special moves instead of normals to build meter
You don’t have to use specials to build meter in sf4, you can use normals, it’s just that you have to HIT with the normal to build meter.

I would have loved another SF3. SF4 is such a bad game by comparison, i can’t even play it because every time i do it reminds me of how much better SF3 3s was…
