Here is the best selling software and hardware in Japan, for the week of January 2nd – January 8th, 2023 courtesy Famitsu.

Software:

1) Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet (NS) – 135,627
2) One Piece: Odyssey (PS4) – 35,123
3) One Piece: Odyssey (PS5) – 26,879
4) Splatoon 3 (NS) – 22,094
5) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (NS) – 18,172
6) Nintendo Switch Sports (NS) – 14,849
7) Minecraft (NS) – 11,025
8) Dragon Quest Treasures (NS) – 7,864
9) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS) – 7,587
10) Mario Party Superstars (NS) – 7,382

Hardware:

1) Nintendo Switch – 74,690
2) PlayStation 5 – 44,113
3) PlayStation 4 – 21,099
4) Xbox Series – 1,052
5) Nintendo 3DS – 93

This week in software, we saw the release of One Piece: Odyssey and though cumulative sales are over 60,000 which is a fair amount, it makes you wonder how much higher it’d have been, had the game also released on Nintendo Switch, which is Japan’s leading platform. Beyond those two SKU’s, the rest of the Top 10 was made up of Nintendo Switch titles.

In hardware, there’s some fair post-holiday hold with PlayStation 5 actually having sold more than last week and last year’s respective week. Nintendo Switch meanwhile, has now sold an astounding 28 million units in Japan with close to 2 months to spare before it finishes its 6th full year on the market. This Friday is the first big release of 2023 in Fire Emblem Engage, so here’s to next week’s charts! Will NS see a decent boost? Just how much will Engage sell? Good stuff coming up! See you next week!
