Today marks the day that Nintendo has officially stopped the production of Wii in Japan. This moment also gives Big N more energy to focus on further building the 3DS brand and give much more, needed attention to Wii U, where the console hasn’t quite took off in its homeland. 12.7 million Wii consoles have been sold in Japan in the last 7 years, which is a great number and makes it the best selling console of the last generation in that market (Xbox 360 by comparison has sold 1.6 million and PlayStation 3 has sold 9.5 million). Here’s to Wii U seeing similar success in the land of the rising sun…and the rest of the world for that matter.
(Nintendo has confirmed to us that Wii production remains the same for the American and European markets.)
