Enterbrain.co.jp just announced that both Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 passed the 1 million units sold mark in Japan during the Christmas weekend.  This makes both games the first two for Nintendo’s new handheld to cross that mark in Japan (and not collective, world wide sales).  Furthermore, with the 3DS selling another 510,629 units last week, it now puts it at 4.1+ million in its short 10 months of availability in that market…passing GameCube’s 4.1 million mark.  What’s also impressive is that 3DS managed to hit 4 million units in sales even faster than Wii (which took a 54 weeks).   On the one hand, it’s great to see Nintendo’s latest portable begin to pick up steam, but at the same time it reminds us just how poorly received was the GCN in Nintendo’s home country.  Now let’s see what the system can do in its first global year, which will be coming up in another quarter!
