Take a look at Japan’s total hardware and software sales for 2011.

January 16, 2012

Hardware Totals for 2011 and Lifetime Totals:

1] Nintendo 3DS (Year: 4,282,143 | Lifetime: 4,282,143)
2] Sony PSP (Year: 2,063,609 | Lifetime: 18,553,397)
3] Sony PlayStation 3 (Year: 1,548,895 | Lifetime: 7,636,386)
4] Nintendo Wii (Year: 883,586 | Lifetime: 12,163,221)
5] Sony PlayStation Vita (Year: 439,986 | Lifetime: 439,986)
6] Nintendo DSi LL (Year: 346,736 | Lifetime: 2,294,319)
7] Nintendo DSi (Year: 290,326 | Lifetime: 5,834,051)
8] Microsoft Xbox 360 (Year: 115,548 | Lifetime: 1,536,045)

10] Nintendo DS Lite (Year: 20,724 | Lifetime: 24,680,117)
11] Sony PSP Go (Year: 15,563 | Lifetime: 175,986)

The 3DS was the big winner in the hardware market for 2011, selling over 2:1 to its closest competitor which was PSP. Meanwhile, another “near” 2:1 battle was between PlayStation 3 and Wii (the latter of which is now 4.1 million ahead in lifetime totals). 2012 will be really exciting to see how 3DS and PS Vita stack up against one another and I’m personally stoked for a new console in Wii U and wonder how it will be received.

Software Totals for 2011:

1] Mario Kart 7 1,160,169 3DS / Nintendo

2] Super Mario 3D Land 1,080,192 3DS / Nintendo

3] Monster Hunter 3G 985,498 3DS / Capcom

22] Yakuza of the End 416,050 PS3 / Sega

23] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. 415,943 PS3 / Capcom

24] Dragon Quest Anniversary Collection 403,953 Wii / Square Enix

25] Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity 376,534 PSP / Sega

26] Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle 361,503 3DS / Level 5

27] Dark Souls 353,549 PS3 / From Software

28] AKB1/48: I Fell in Love With an Idol in Guam 350,350 PSP / Namco Bandai

29] Kirby: Mass Attack 349,899 DS / Nintendo

30] The Little Battlers 346,608 PSP / Level 5

3DS was the only hardware in 2011 to have two games…in fact, any at all cross the million sales mark (with one more being a mere 15,000 off), but PSP, PS3, Wii, and DS all did have a couple titles each that did at least 500,000. It’s going to be a lot of fun watching the numbers get big again in 2012. I wouldn’t surprised at all if this year, Japan sees a few titles that easily cracked 2-3 million in sales. Dragon Quest X and Monster Hunter 4, I’m looking at you.

Hey Paul.

How are things looking for that Wii U scoop, are things going well towards that end of the month unveiling?
