NPD is a consumer market research group that supplies sales data for a number of areas, including the video game industry. This North American company founded in 1967 gives us a pretty accurate look, each month at overall hardware and software sales. Below is data for June, 2010.

The best selling system for the month is the Nintendo DS.

The Nintendo DS is still the most powerful selling system on a monthly basis for most of the year in the US, toppin another half a million in June. Xbox 360 saw a nice boost thanks to the newly redesigned model. Wii continues to sell well as usual for the month. PS3 sits with solid numbers at fourth. And finally, the PSP sells only 24% of DS’ total, but it’s still hanging in there.

Well, despite Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy coming out late May and having the whole fresh month of June to be the top selling game, Take 2 Interactive‘s Red Dead Redemption on Xbox 360 managed to sell almost 600,000 copies for the month, nabbing 1st place. It was 1 of 2 Xbox 360 games total in the top 10. Wii made a big impression with 5 games. PlayStation 3 had 2 and the Nintendo DS had 1. Exciting month and stay tuned to this time in August for July’s numbers.

  1. I wasn’t surprised to see Nintendo DS rank #1, it appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers and offers way more games than the PSP.

Red Dead Redemption would no doubt be #1 especially in the Xbox 360, since they have more online community and the game has a great single and multiplayer campaign. It’s great for either console and bringing along some friends, only makes it better.

    1. Very well said. The DS certainly is a little juggernaut of a handheld. Red Dead Redemption is also a very fine game and Take Two Interactive deserves their success.
